Build the skills to create web apps, admin tools, and REST APIs.
Build RescueScout, a Django app that lets an animal rescue manage its animals and accept adoption applications. Django comes with batteries included, and you'll learn how its components work, such as the ORM for databases, the admin interface for staff, and the template language for site pages, and how to build a JSON API with DRF. You'll leave knowing which tool fits which job, ready to start your own Django project or work in an existing one.
What You Will Master
⚡ Build powerful admin tools. Model data and relationships with Django's ORM, then customize the admin with lists, filters, search, inline editing, and permissions.
⚡ Create forms with built-in validation. Use ModelForm to turn your models into forms and enforce validation rules.
⚡ Build REST APIs. Expose your models through Django REST Framework (DRF) using serializers, viewsets, and routers.
⚡ Choose the right tool for the job. Use the admin for internal tools, templates and forms for server-rendered pages, and APIs for JavaScript frontends, mobile apps, and integrations with other services.
Prerequisites
❗ Our
Python for Professional Developers course or equivalent experience with modern, typed Python, uv, and building a small web API. Familiarity with HTML and HTTP is helpful, but not required.
Who is this for?
⭐ Python developers who want a practical introduction to building web apps and APIs with Django, or who want to work in an existing Django codebase but don't know where to start.
