A study method for the open-book Certified Fire Plans Examiner exam: know the books, find the clause, beat the clock.

What you'll learn
Explain how the CFPE exam is built and which reference books it draws on.
Candidates who know the subject but run out of time in open-book exams.
Follow a repeatable lookup path (book, chapter, clause, table row) on worked building examples.
The course does not include NFPA text.

Requirements
Engineers, plans examiners, inspectors and fire protection professionals preparing for the CFPE.
A working knowledge of building plans and fire protection systems. No prior exam experience is needed.
The course does not include NFPA text.

Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Narration uses an AI voice cloned from the instructor's own voice; animations are code-generated with AI assistance; all technical content is written and checked by the instructor.

The CFPE is an open-book exam, and that is the trap. Most candidates do not fail because they never read the codes. They fail because they cannot find the answer in time. This course teaches one thing: how to study for the CFPE so that, on exam day, you can go from a question to the right clause quickly and with confidence.

You will learn how the current exam is built and where its questions come from, then how each reference book is organised: NFPA 101, NFPA 1, NFPA 13, NFPA 72 and the IFSTA Plans Examiner manual. You will see how to tab your books, how to plan eight weeks of study, how to use practice tests, and how to read a question so you know which book to open before you open it.

Then the method is put to work. Three example buildings (an office, a banquet hall and a hospital bed floor) are walked through lookup by lookup: occupant load, exits, stairs and doors, travel distance, fire alarm, sprinklers, smoke compartments and fire department access. Each step names the book, the chapter and the clause, so you practise the path and not just the answer. A timed walkthrough of ten exam-style questions puts the method under the clock, with the path to each answer shown, and a one-page recap sums it up.

Every clause cited in the lectures was checked against the edition named on screen, and every lecture was reviewed and approved by the instructor before release. The lectures describe where to find each requirement in plain words. They do not reproduce NFPA text, so you will need your own copies of the reference books.

About the instructor: Hussein Ragab is a Chartered Engineer, a member of CIBSE, a member of ASHRAE and a Certified Fire Protection Specialist, with more than 14 years of mechanical and fire protection design on high-rise, hospital and mixed-use projects. He sat the CFPE exam in its current format.

This course is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) or IFSTA. CFPE, NFPA 1, NFPA 13, NFPA 72 and NFPA 101 are trademarks of the NFPA. Always confirm requirements against the edition your exam or your authority uses.
