A college level foundation in plant identification, anatomy, physiology and botanical evidence for herbal study.

What you'll learn
⚡ Identify and document cultivated plants using botanical names, diagnostic morphology, a key and identification confidence.
⚡ Explain how plant cells, tissues, organs and reproductive structures relate to herbal materials.
⚡ Connect photosynthesis, respiration, water uptake and specialized metabolism with plant growth and material variation.
⚡ Evaluate cultivation, developmental stage, harvest and storage records using botanical principles.
⚡ Distinguish botanical, ethnobotanical, preclinical and clinical evidence and write a claim supported by its source.
⚡ Produce a traceable botanical dossier with photographs, reference checks and clearly stated uncertainty.

Requirements
❗ High school biology is helpful. Bring a notebook and ruler; a hand lens is optional. Clearly labeled cultivated herbs or the supplied cases support the activities. No professional herbal training is required.

Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Build the plant science foundation that supports careful herbal study. Botany for Herbalists brings together plant identification, structure, physiology and evidence interpretation in a college level introduction that you can complete at your own pace. The narration uses an AI version of my voice, with teaching explanations, botanical examples and questions that invite you to reason through the material.

Begin with an orientation video, a brief instructor biography, course navigation, study strategies, optional AI tutoring prompts, and a readiness check. Across twelve core modules and sixty focused video lectures, you will move from botanical names and scientific observations to cells, tissues, roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. You will practice reading identifying characters, following a dichotomous key, checking a botanical name and documenting how confident you are in an identification. Selected flowering plant families provide practical comparisons without treating one visible feature as a complete determination.

The physiology modules explain photosynthesis, cellular respiration, water movement, mineral nutrition and growth. Cultivation cases connect these processes with observations of living herbs. For example, you will examine why a plant may wilt even when its growing medium is moist, and what additional evidence would help explain the problem. Later lessons introduce specialized metabolites and explore why chemical composition can vary with the plant part, developmental stage and preparation.

You will also learn to distinguish an ethnobotanical use report, an experimental result and evidence about a human outcome. The final project brings these skills together in a botanical dossier for three clearly labeled cultivated herbs, with photographs, name checks, morphological descriptions, cultivation reasoning and a supported evidence summary.

Use a notebook, a ruler and cultivated plants, or work through the supplied teaching cases and images. Open reading links, slide resources and practice prompts support further study. High school biology is helpful, and the opening modules establish the terminology needed for the rest of the course. The emphasis throughout is accurate botanical observation, traceable sources and conclusions that match the available evidence.

Who this course is for
⭐ Beginning herbal students, plant enthusiasts and learners seeking an undergraduate foundation for further study of medicinal plants.
