Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
The Diploma in Underground Mining Engineering: Mine Planning and Methods is a comprehensive educational course designed to introduce students, mining professionals, engineering graduates, technicians, and industry enthusiasts to the essential principles, technologies, and methods used in underground mining operations.
Underground mining is an important part of the global minerals industry, providing access to valuable mineral deposits located beneath the Earth's surface. Unlike surface mining, underground operations require carefully planned access systems, suitable extraction methods, ground stability considerations, and effective transportation strategies to ensure safe, productive, and economically sustainable mineral recovery.
This course provides a structured introduction to underground mine engineering, beginning with fundamental concepts of mine access and the design and construction of underground shafts. Students will explore vertical shafts, inclined shafts, declines, ramps, adits, portals, shaft dimensions, shaft sinking operations, and the factors influencing mine access selection.
The course then examines underground mine planning and development, including geological considerations, rock mass classification, ground conditions, mining method selection, production scheduling, ore dilution, and transportation systems. Learners will study important rock classification techniques such as Rock Quality Designation (RQD), Rock Mass Rating (RMR), and the Q-system.
A major part of the course focuses on underground mining methods. Students will examine self-supported techniques such as room-and-pillar mining, shrinkage stoping, sublevel stoping, and vertical crater retreat mining. The course also discusses supported methods, particularly cut-and-fill mining and underground backfilling systems.
Finally, learners will explore underground caving operations, including longwall mining, sublevel caving, and block caving. These lectures introduce important concepts such as ore recovery, drawpoint systems, ground movement, equipment selection, production efficiency, and mining method limitations.
Throughout the course, learners will encounter practical engineering concepts, mine layout illustrations, simplified calculations, comparisons of mining techniques, and real mining case studies drawn from the supplied learning material.
By completing this course, students will develop a foundation for understanding how underground mines are accessed, designed, planned, developed, and operated. The course is particularly suitable for individuals interested in mining engineering, geological engineering, mine operations, and underground mineral extraction.
