Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence for voice overs.
This course explains how a law firm works as a business. It is built for people who meet law firms as counterparties, investments or employers rather than as clients: finance professionals, analysts looking at listed legal services, practice managers, and lawyers who want to see the economics of their own firm. No prior banking or legal knowledge is assumed.
The course follows a single idea from beginning to end. A law firm's raw material is qualified time, and that time is converted into money at three points: recorded, billed and collected. The gaps between those three numbers are where the business lives. You will work through the billable hour as a unit of account, the annual hours target per fee-earner, leverage and the pyramid, realisation and write-offs, discount authority, working capital in work in progress and debtors, and the alternative fee arrangements that take firms off the hour.
Later sections cover professional indemnity insurance, disbursements and counsel's fees as pass-through money, and how to read a listed law firm's disclosures. The final lessons use the regulator's own counts of firms and solicitors to set the scale of the industry, and close on what an outsider can and cannot know about a partnership.
The teaching is concrete. Each lesson works through a mechanism, shows the arithmetic where arithmetic applies, and uses published figures from listed firms and regulators to anchor the discussion. Illustrative schematics are labelled as such, and the course is explicit about which numbers are disclosed and which are not.
By the end you will be able to trace an hour of legal work from timesheet to bank account, compute realisation and lock-up, compare fee models, and read a law firm's public accounts with a clear sense of what the figures do and do not measure.
