❗ No programming experience or previous Copilot experience is required. We introduce the interface and essential prompting techniques before applying them to the projects.

Description

This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.

Turn financial data into analysis, forecasts and management communication with Microsoft Copilot.
A manager asks why profitability declined. Actual results differ from budget. The forecast needs updating, and the findings must become a clear executive presentation. These are the kinds of requests finance professionals face-and the kinds of workflows you'll practice in this course.

Microsoft Copilot for Finance: Excel Analysis & Reporting takes you through two connected business projects, with Excel at the center and Word and PowerPoint supporting the final communication. You'll learn how to define the task, provide useful context, guide Copilot's work and assess the results before presenting them.

In the first project, you'll investigate financial performance. Working as an analyst for Stride Sports, a fictional sportswear company, you'll start with financial statements and develop profitability, efficiency, liquidity and cash-flow metrics. You'll use DuPont analysis to examine return on equity, build a financial dashboard and develop management insights. Then you'll turn the analysis into an executive report in Word, challenge its claims and apply focused improvements.

In the second project, you'll move into budgeting, forecasting and management reporting. You'll reconcile monthly data from different sources, compare actual performance with the approved budget and quantify revenue, cost and margin drivers. You'll build an updated full-year forecast using closed actuals and supplied assumptions, validate selected calculations and compare alternative scenarios. Finally, you'll create a management presentation in PowerPoint, refine its message and prepare for difficult questions from the chief financial officer.

Throughout both projects, you'll practice the choices that make AI-assisted financial work useful

✨Give Copilot a financial framework: specify definitions, formulas, reporting periods, signs and assumptions.

✨Choose how to work: use conversation to explore a task, planning to review an approach and editing to authorize changes.

✨Review the evidence: inspect selected formulas and source references, check calculations and recognize the limits of the review.

✨Interpret results carefully: distinguish measured financial effects from business explanations that require more information.

✨Communicate for management: select relevant evidence, explain uncertainty and make the requested decision clear.

The demonstrations also show how to respond when the first output needs refinement. You'll see how to select useful recommendations, clarify a request and make practical manual adjustments when appropriate. This gives you examples of professional judgment in action, alongside the technical steps.

You'll have the materials to practice and revisit the work
✨ Clean starter workbooks and completed project files.

✨ Executive report and PowerPoint presentation examples.

✨ Five adaptable master prompts and the specific project prompts.

✨ Complete Copilot chat transcripts showing requests, responses and refinements.

✨ Case briefs, financial metric definitions and presentation slides.

✨ Exercises, knowledge checks and AI-powered roleplays.

✨ Access to the course Q&A forum.

The roleplays let you practice explaining your contribution: what Copilot did, what you decided, how you reviewed the results and what remains uncertain. These are useful conversations to prepare for when colleagues or managers ask how artificial intelligence contributed to your work.

This course is designed for financial analysts, accounting and finance professionals, managers and business professionals who want to apply Copilot to recognizable financial tasks. Basic familiarity with Excel and financial statements will help you get the most from the projects. No programming experience is required. For hands-on practice, you'll need access to the relevant Copilot features in Microsoft 365; availability depends on your subscription and organization's settings.

Your instructor, Carlos Martínez, holds a PhD in Management from the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland and an MBA from INCAE Business School. He has written more than 25 teaching cases, including cases in the Harvard and University of Michigan collections, and brings his experience teaching finance and analytics to the project demonstrations.

Enroll and build two practical financial workflows-from source data to executive communication-with Copilot supporting the work and your judgment guiding the results.
